Police warn of a break-in in Newcastle

Staffordshire Police have stepped up patrols in the Clayton area following an increase in reported incidents.

Officials have now warned homeowners to protect their homes from potential intruders as they “focus investigative efforts” on the location.

PC Lucy Preston of the Newcastle Neighborhood Policing Team said, “We would like to advise the public to take the necessary steps to protect their property from criminals.

“Although the number of break-ins in the Clayton area has increased slightly, there are key methods that any potential burglar can use to deter potential burglars.”

The police gave the following information:

  • Make sure you don’t leave valuable items in sight of windows or access points. This also includes leaving the packaging of expensive items outside of the property. Burglars target homes that they believe contain valuables.
  • When leaving the house, especially during routine times such as school and work hours, make sure that all entrances are secured and closed. Burglars are often aware of the times when someone is expected to be away from home.

  • If possible, install CCTV or a smart doorbell in your property. This clearly deterred burglars.
  • Make sure that vehicle keys are kept in a safe place and out of sight, e.g. B. on a kitchen surface. Some burglars choose a house because of a specific vehicle in the driveway, often more expensive cars and motorcycles.
  • Whenever possible, make sure that outbuildings like sheds and garages are locked. Burglars know that sheds and garages are not always secured. It can prove to be a best practice to move valuable items to a safer place.
  • Watch out for cold callers knocking on your door. They may be searching the property for a future break-in.
  • If you suspect vehicles or people loitering near your property, report it to 101.
