Born To Run Marathon Club

Active members

The club members have been very active over the past few weeks, taking part in various events One of which was the trip back to Dingle to see the return of the marathon and half marathon, while the day began dry but cloudy soon and heaven opened the rain danced on the roads enough to make sure everyone was drenched through but just as the beautiful scenery came into view the sun appeared to put smiles on everyone’s faces.

As always it was a great event and so well organized and a great atmosphere.

We had runners running a half marathon for the first time and a few PBs were broken on the day too. Congratulations to all. While Dingle was a challenge in itself it paled in comparison to the epic task taken on by Tom Foley who successfully completed the Kerry way ultra again. An absolutely fantastic achievement.

Couch to 5k

Now that the summer has come to an end we are once again starting our 2022 Couch to 5k program. Starting on September 19th it will take place on Mondays and Wednesdays evenings at 6.30am from the Brandon carpark for 8 weeks.

The cost is just €10 and anyone over the age of 18 can sign up, from those wanting to start from scratch to anyone who might like to return to running after taking time out.

The couch to 5k mentors are graduates of the program and are there to help and encourage the participants to reach the goal of running a 5k consistently.

An organized 5k will be arranged at the end of the 8 weeks where the runners will receive their btr 5k medal.

TRALEE TOASTMASTERS

First meeting

What can I say about our very first meeting on September 5th only that it was an altogether wonderful event. Even before the meeting started it was a “hive of activity” with the last minute preparations being carried out. Members of the local press were present taking photographs before the meeting, with members catching up with one another, and guests being welcomed to the meeting as well.

The meeting was opened by our President James Finnegan, it was very poignant, our first live meeting since March 2020. James’ welcome to all the members and guests was very warm and heartfelt. James’ opening address at our first live meeting was uplifting, positive and affirming. We wish James every success in his role as President of our club for 2022 2023, and every best wish to the committee in their work to move the club forward in a positive direction.

James then handed the gavel over Derry Butler, who was Toastmaster for the evening. Derry chaired the meeting in a very professional manner, making sure the meeting ran smoothly and in sequence. Derry made all of us present indeed most welcome, members and guests alike, in his own unique inimitable style. The meeting flowed well from beginning to end without hardly any glitch.

In the first part of the meeting we had three wonderful, uplifting and light-hearted speeches, from Marie, Catriona, and Sergey. Each speech was unique with great quality of content. Marie, Catriona, and Sergey spoke clearly and confidentially, they all did themselves proud.

After the speeches we had our session of table topics (impromptu speaking), Sonia Elston was the Topicsmaster for the night. We were royally entertained with Sonia’s unique array of topics, with great humor and light-heartedness. The topics certainly “added flavour” to the night, and certainly whetted everyone’s appetite for more.

After table topics had been wrapped up we all had the opportunity for a cup of tea/coffee and a chat. Afterwards we had the next part of the meeting, the evaluation session, where the meeting as a whole was evaluated. Finally our Toastmaster and President wrapped up the meeting and we said our farewells.

All members who carried out roles at the meeting without doubt gave a great account of themselves. All their hard work and efficiency paid off in terms that the meeting went very well, which was clearly evident. Congratulations to one and all.

All in all our first night back was a highly enjoyable and very memorable occasion for all the right reasons.

We will be holding our next meeting on Monday September 19th in the pastoral center at Our Lady and St Brendan’s Parish in Tralee at 8.00pm. It would be great to see you there, you will be mostly warmly welcome, and you will be among friends. It is an evening of great light-hearted entertainment, you will not be disappointed.

Please do not hesitate to contact Derry at 086 2580662 or myself Michael at 086 8378721 should you require any more information.
