The Jacksonville Jaguars hired Doug Pederson as head coach Thursday night, replacing Urban Meyer, who was fired in mid-December after the Jaguars went 2-11.
Pederson, 54, led the Philadelphia Eagles to the Super Bowl Championship in the 2017-18 season and made the playoffs three times in five seasons with the team.
Broncos, Giants respond to claims
Denver Broncos President of Football Operations John Elway responded Thursday to claims by former Miami Dolphins head coach Brian Flores that his 2019 interview with Elway and the Broncos was a sham to comply with the Rooney Rule, which requires that minority candidates be interviewed. Flores said Elway and other executives showed up late and disheveled, claiming “it was obvious they had been drinking heavily the night before”.
Elway called the claims “false and defamatory” and said he had seriously considered Flores as a candidate. He also said if he looked disheveled it was because they flew in after another overnight interview and only slept for a few hours.
The New York Giants responded extensively Thursday to Flores’ allegation that his interview with them last week was also a farce. He cited a text exchange with New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick three days before his interview that led Flores to believe Brian Daboll had already been selected.
The Giants said the allegations were “simply false” and that their interest in Flores was “serious and genuine.” The team also said they did not decide on Daboll until January 28, the day after Flores’ second interview, noting that the text exchange with Belichick occurred the day before Daboll’s interview.
New allegations against Daniel Snyder
Fresh allegations of sexual harassment were made against Washington Commanders owner Daniel Snyder on Thursday.
A former marketing and events coordinator for the team, Tiffani Johnston, told a congressional committee that she was placed next to Snyder at a work lunch in 2005 or 2006 to allow him “to put his hand on my thigh under the table.” She also said that later that evening he “aggressively pushed me towards his limousine with his hand on my lower back” and didn’t stop until his attorney told him, “That’s a bad idea.”
Snyder denied the claims. Johnston was one of five women who spoke out about their alleged harassment and discrimination before the committee investigating the team.
