The passion of car lovers knows no bounds. While spending millions of dollars on cars isn’t uncommon, there are some who will spend huge sums of money on a specific license plate. And when it says “F1” – a world-famous acronym for Formula 1 – a lot is at stake. This license plate belongs to a man in the UK and has registered more than once as the most expensive license plate in the world. It was first purchased in 2008 by Afzal Khan, a British national who runs a company called Project Kahn, an automotive design company.
This is the most expensive license plate in the world and costs Rs 132 crore
Before we dive into the details of the world’s most expensive license plate, let’s get to know the second most expensive – owned by a UAE resident. According to the Khaleej Times, number AA9 sold for 38 million Dhs, which is about 77 billion rupees. The AA9 license plate was auctioned at a charity auction in Dubai and the proceeds went to charitable foundations.
To get back to the world’s most expensive license plate, the hugely popular F1 license plate is registered on a Bugatti Veyron owned by Afzal Khan. Interestingly, the fancy price of Rs 132 crore on the license plate is actually much higher than the price of the Bugatti Veyron, which is also one of the most expensive cars in the world, mind you. In an interview excerpt from Khan, which is from ET, when asked about the license plate, he said:
“You can’t appreciate something so rare, to be honest, I’m more attached to it. The license plate was first registered by Essex County Council in 1904 and it obviously has the acronym Formula 1, so it’s one of “a kind. I’ve been considering buying the license plate for a long time. When it was made available in 2008, I hit two other potential buyers to get the license plate from Essex County Council. The 114 year old registration was previously on a 30,000 pound Volvo S80 used by the council chairman. The council sold it to me in 2008 to raise money for a charity that aims to raise the standards of young drivers.
That being said, based on the inputs from the same interview, Khan has a few other license plates that are also quite expensive. His first special license plate – KHA 17 – was bought for £ 700 (Rs 71,000). Khan later sold it for a massive profit for £ 6,000 (Rs 6 lakh). His collection is huge and includes 4 HRH (His Or Her Royal Highness), 1 CEO, WED 111N, K4 AHN, F1 PET and ROV 3R.
