Ferrari will present its first fully electric supercar as early as 2025, says the head of the luxury car brand

The legendary Italian automaker Ferrari is the latest marquee brand promising an all-electric supercar.

In a shareholders meeting earlier this week, CEO John Elkann predicted that car fans could expect an electric Ferrari to slide silently out of the company’s Maranello headquarters by 2025.

And he added it would be “anything you dream of, what Maranello engineers and designers can imagine for such a milestone in our history”.

Former Ferrari boss Louis Camilleri had already ruled out a fully electric model in 2019. “A lot of our customers have trouble imagining a real Ferrari that is fully electric,” he said.

The 66-year-old CEO had told reporters that he didn’t think the company would ever have an all-electric lineup, and it was doubtful that even half of the Ferrari models available would be electric in his life.

But Elkann canceled that prediction with this announcement. He was positive about the prospects for EV technology and said: “Our interpretation of these technologies in both motorsport and road vehicles is a great opportunity to bring the uniqueness and passion of Ferrari closer to new generations.”

Electric cars are not as cutting edge as many people think. The Englishman Thomas Parker created the first series electric car in 1884, and the Scottish inventor Robert Anderson had demonstrated an early prototype of an electric vehicle as early as 1832.

The leading manufacturer of electric vehicles today is Tesla. Elon Musk’s pioneering company sold over 220,000 electric cars in 2018, around 70,000 more than its closest competitor.

But now several great players have joined the race. Vokwagen in particular is chasing the electric dream. “Volkswagen will change radically,” said CEO Herbert Diess to the shareholders. But make no mistake – the supertanker is picking up speed. “

Bloomberg estimates that battery electric vehicle sales could significantly outperform traditional gasoline and diesel vehicles by 2040.

It’s likely that just a few of them will be Ferraris, but the Maranello factory will almost certainly produce some of the most sought-after cars of the all-electric era.
