Road to the semifinals
Real Madrid were used in Group B this season together with Borussia Mönchengladbach, Shakhtar Donetsk and Inter Milan. Los Blanco had exceeded the group stage with 10 points and qualified for the round of 16, in which they defeated Atalanta (4-1). In the quarter-finals, Real Madrid beat Liverpool 3-1 on two legs to secure a place in the semi-finals.
Chelsea were in Group E alongside Sevilla, Krasnodar and Rennes. The blues under the then coach Frank Lampard had surpassed the group stage with 14 points. In the round of 16 they beat Atletico Madrid 3-0 overall and defeated FC Porto 2-1 in the quarterfinals over two legs to reach the semifinals.
