The York County Coroner’s Office said in a news release that it was called to Hanover Foods early Tuesday morning after an employee fell into a bean hopper. Witnesses told investigators that the 59-year-old victim was found in the bean hopper just after 2:30 am, but it was not clear how long he had been there.

Employees said that when they pulled the victim out of the equipment, he “was conscious and standing upright and attempting to walk initially after removal.” He soon lost consciousness and was pronounced dead when emergency life-saving measures were unsuccessful, the coroner’s office said.

The York County Coroner said an autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday morning. The victim’s name was not released.

In a statement to WHTM, Hanover Foods said, “First, Hanover Foods Corporation wants to extend its deepest sympathy to the family and friends of the temporary worker that passed away early this morning at its Hanover canning facility. Hanover Foods Corporation is cooperating with authorities’ investigations.”

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is conducting its own investigation into the accident.
